Fishing in large reservoirs and lakes offers me a unique pleasure when targeting bream and roach, but there is a significant challenge associated with these bodies of water: the near-shore area can be alarmingly shallow until you venture several meters out into the lake.
This poses multiple issues that can only be resolved by getting directly into the water. By casting slightly further from the shore, I gn an advantage in terms of reach for casting a feeder or pole fishing techniques and also find it easier to land fish, particularly bigger bream, without playing them on shallow surfaces. Fishing in water is not only more enjoyable but also kinder to the fish when utilizing a landing net - as opposed to having it partially exposed above the surface, which may occur while bank-based.
The exact distance you venture out into the lake deps on personal preference, but I recomm considering 'safety first'. Lakes can quickly drop off into deep waters that aren't visible from the surface; hence testing depth before settling is advisable. I would wade out with a landing net handle to check depths ahead of me until finding where it noticeably deepens, then sit back about half-a-meter or one meter from this point.
Utilizing a platform significantly enhances stability compared to sitting directly in water on your box legs. Choose a platform that is large enough for accommodating the entire box and ensure the fixing points are solidly locked slippage!
Investing in chest or thigh waders allows you to get ahead of the platform, securing the legs while leveling it up; these can be invaluable when setting things up safely.
Avoid having to make frequent trips back to shore by preparing for your setup beforehand. I recomm setting up two large side trays: one carries bt and groundbt supplies while the other holds terminal tackle and additional feeders. Additionally, having a groundbt bowl hoop that slots into a bucket can be convenient as well.
Securing your gear is crucial when fishing from water; an extable top kit roost for placing rods without causing damage to the tip in shallow waters is highly recommed. This item must have extension capabilities to cope with deeper bodies of water, while storing my landing net is made easier by resting it on a pole roller placed behind me.
In summary, wading into water opens up new possibilities when fishing large reservoirs and lakes for bream and roach, from gning more reach for casting techniques to ensuring fish welfare when using a landing net. Proper preparation with platforms, waders, organized gear, and secure rod storage can significantly enhance your experience by minimizing challenges posed by deep and shallow waters alike.
